Deland Chan
New York City, NY
Deland became the prime mover of the Roots and Shoots project at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, which undertook the restoration of the Native Species Garden in Inwood Hill Park, the last nine acres of natural forest in Manhattan. “We believe that the traditional definition of environment, it entails much more than most people usually think of” Deland said. “It can be applied to New York City, where there is a delicate balance between the natural ecosystems and the man-made ‘urban jungle’, and where the natural inhabitants of birds, animals, and insects co-exist daily with seven million humans.”
